Former National League MVP and Cardinals Hall of Famer Willie McGee joined the club on Tuesday and will spend an open-ended stretch of time with the team as a guest instructor.
McGee has served as a special assistant to the general manager for several years, though his tutoring has been exclusively in the minor leagues during the regular season.
Cardinals manager Mike Matheny called it a “great step just having him in here during the season to work,” and McGee didn’t miss a moment. He walked into Matheny’s office offering a defense of some recent plays he saw in the outfield.
