DENVER • There have been times in recent years that Adam Wainwright has relied so much on the jib of his cutter that he would turn to it even ahead of his more-famous curve. The cutter could be his go-to, his be-all, and often his end-all, until three starts ago when he made the decision that may have turned around his season.
He abandoned the cutter, grounded it for its poor behavior.
“It deserved it,” Wainwright said.
What emerged in its place was a savvier and wickeder use of his fastball and curveball that brought him to Saturday night – and a reunion.
