MILWAUKEE • Although rookie Luke Weaver was able to absorb a harsh lesson and be better it for just three innings later, by then it was too late.
An otherwise assertive outing for the Cardinals’ righthander went sour in the third inning on a simple mistake. With two outs, Weaver walked the opposing pitcher, and what followed two batters later Wednesday was the swing that decided the game. A momentary lapse became a lingering loss when Kirk Nieuwenhuis connected for a three-run homer that was all Milwaukee needed in a 3-1 victory at Miller Park.
“That’s one that is just going to haunt him a little bit,” manager Mike Matheny said.
