In a series of moves made Friday night after Gyorko left the ballpark, his back seized by spasms, the Cardinals added infielder Tommy Edman to the 40-man roster and promoted him. Gyorko went on the 10-day injured list Saturday. Manager Mike Shildt acknowledged Gyorko’s frustration and the difficulty of shelving a player for that long who could have returned sooner, possibly as soon as the series-opener Monday in Miami.
“Challenging decision because he could probably go in a couple of days, but not today and maybe not tomorrow and uncertain about Monday,” Shildt outlined. “Just forecast what it looks like so we just made a decision to go ahead and get somebody who was fresh and we knew we could rely on physically, starting (right away).
