Walks prove costly as Cards let game against Reds slip away

The Cardinals’ pitchers struck out 14 hitters Sunday and their defense, other than a fly ball lost in the sun at Busch Stadium, was exemplary, with diving plays made by Matt Carpenter, Paul Goldschmidt and, especially by Harrison Bader. The offense scored five runs and the Cardinals had been the only team in the majors not to lose a game in which it had scored five runs or more.

That record had been 17-0. Now it is 17-1 after a 10-5 loss to the Cincinnati Reds in a game the Cardinals could have, if not should have, won.
