Cardinals righthander Adam Wainwright pitched only two innings in one game after being sidelined in mid-August with an elbow impingement. Wainwright clearly wasn’t himself that night in Pittsburgh and was shut down for the rest of the season, so on Tuesday he will have the issue addressed with arthroscopic surgery to be performed here.
It is not reconstructive surgery, said manager Mike Matheny. “Just a cleanup,” said Matheny Sunday before the season finale. “Get in there and get that stuff out."
Matheny said Wainwright would be ready for spring training and also said that he expected the 36-year-old, who tied for the staff lead in wins at 12, would be in his prospective rotation for next year.
