MILWAUKEE • Through four innings, Adam Wainwright has been everything he said he would be in his final start of a mostly forgettable August.
Wainwright has faced the minimum, retiring the first nine batters he faced. Leadoff hitter Jonathan Villar stung a single to start the fourth inning. Wainwright coolly got a groundball for the double play that kept him cruising through four.
He's turned 12 batters into 12 outs and done so on 43 pitches.
The Cardinals have backed him with two hits and little else against Wily Peralta. The cagey Brewers righthander who has pitched so so many games against the Cardinals also retired the first nine batters he faced in order.
