JUPITER, Fla. • Adam Wainwright turned in a solid performance in his second start of the spring Wednesday when he allowed a run and three hits over 3 2/3 innings against the Washington Nationals.
Wainwright, particularly effective with a 72 mile an hour slow curveball, struck out three and walked two while throwing 63 pitches, 39 of them strikes. He had walked three in three innings in his first spring start after having off-season elbow surgery.
One of Wainwright's strikeouts was a full-count whiff (at 72 mph) of Washington slugger Bryce Harper after a nine-pitch at-bat, which actually might have been 10 but home-plate umpire Angel Hernandez had called time when Harper appeared to have been struck out.
