Shildt reported that Wainwright, who has been out for four months, threw 90 pitches and topped out at about 90 mph. When asked if the 37-year-old had anything left to prove, Shildt said, “I don’t believe so.”
Asked, additionally, if it was miraculous that Wainwright would even be at this point, Shildt replied, “It’s Adam Wainwright. I think we know we can expect anything and everything. While it is maybe mildly surprising, it’s not shocking by any stretch. He’s a very dedicated, exceptionally gifted athlete and man.”
Wainwright well might start against the Tigers next weekend in Detroit although Shildt, having just experienced the toughest loss of his brief big-league career Sunday, hadn’t wrapped his arms around what would happen with Daniel Poncedeleon and Luke Weaver, his Saturday and Sunday starters, and Wainwright next weekend.
