Wainwright completes seven innings with shutout intact

By almost all measures, Sunday has been Adam Wainwright's best start of the season.

Wainwright completed seven innings for his longest start of the season and didn't allow a run for the first time this year. The Cardinals led 4-0 at the seventh-inning stretch.

The last time Wainwright didn't give up a run came on July 16, 2016, when he threw a complete game shutout against the Miami Marlins.

The Cardinals' bats have been silent since Matt Carpenter's home run in the third inning, but they haven't had to make much noise.

In the bottom of the seventh, with Wainwright's spot in the batting order due up first, Dexter Fowler pinch hit for the starter.
