PITTSBURGH • With the Cardinals out of position players and the pitcher’s spot coming up in the 12th inning Friday night, Pittsburgh managed Clint Hurdle took the bold stroke of intentionally walking Aledmys Diaz with Matt Carpenter at first and two outs.
Pitcher Jonathan Broxton wasn’t going to bat, having already thrown two innings. So, the Cardinals turned to their secret weapon, Adam Wainwright, who fell right in line with the club’s other pinch hitters this year.
Wainwright, connecting for his sixth extra-base hit of the season, shot a two-run double, running his RBI total to 10.
