The Cardinals got a leadoff triple when Matt Carpenter's fly ball dropped beyond the reach of shortstop Jose Iglesias and bounded high and away from the Reds' fielders. Carpenter then stood at third base while the next three batters all got out without advancing the runner. The Cardinals got another runner to scoring position in the second inning and with two outs threatened to leave him stranded as well. That's when Wainwright slashed a single to left field that scored Dexter Fowler.
