The Cardinals were in quest of their 10,000th regular-season win Monday night since they joined the National League in 1892. John Gant had accounted for exactly one of the previous 9,999.
But, making a start in place of injured Michael Wacha that many had suggested should go to Memphis phenom Dakota Hudson, Gant throttled one of baseball’s hottest teams.
Gant (2-2), whose earned-run average at Memphis actually had been 1.65 covering the several times he has been up and down this year, held the Cleveland Indians to one infield single over seven scoreless innings in a 4-0 Cardinals victory at Busch Stadium, ending a Cleveland winning streak at seven games.
