ST. LOUIS • It is entirely possible that the ruling on the field and the explanation provided after Thursday's game are not the final words on a wild, confusing walk-off victory for the Cardinals.
The Reds could yet have a say, on behalf of the Giants.
In the ninth inning Thursday, Yadier Molina drove a pitch to the left-field wall. The ball one-hopped and caromed back onto the field, allowing Matt Carpenter to score and give the Cardinals a vital 4-3 victory against the Cincinnati Reds. The win put them a 1/2-game back in the National League wild-card race, and a Giants' loss later in the evening would put them in a tie for the second wild-card berth.
