Umpire injured, exits Marlins-Cards opener

ST. LOUIS -- Home-plate umpire Chad Fairchild was struck near his right elbow by a foul tip in the first inning on Friday and removed from the game between the Marlins and Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

Fairchild was shaken up on Matt Holliday's foul ball, which appeared to deflect off the side of Fairchild's elbow. He was tended to by the Cardinals' training staff, and after a couple of minutes, he walked off the field.
