JUPITER, Fla. • Cardinals pitching coach Derek Lilliquist suggested Monday that some late-inning relievers might actually work two innings at a time this year, which could be different from the basic, one-and-done (or less) format of recent years.
“It’s a possibility, in the right scenario,” he said. “For instance, if Seth (Maness) goes out there and has a clean sixth, he goes back out there for the seventh.”
Not that Maness hasn’t done that. He worked two or more innings four times in his 76 appearances in 2014 and had 18 of more than one inning out of his total of 73 innings.
