The Cardinals had prided themselves on having perhaps the best defensive outfield in the National League. And then, in the space of two innings Thursday night, they lost two-thirds of it to injuries, which could cause both right fielder Stephen Piscotty (strained right hamstring) and center fielder Dexter Fowler (strained right shoulder) to go on the 10-day disabled list, with Fowler seemingly the more seriously hurt.
Piscotty was hurt running out a ground ball in the second inning. And Fowler was hurt diving for a two-base hit in the third inning at chilly Busch Stadium, where only 12,893 out of 36,250 paid customers actually showed up for a game whose starting time was moved back 5½ hours because of weather concerns.
