JUPITER, Fla. • When the call came with an opportunity that would change the trajectory of his career, Lane Thomas missed it.
Thomas was a High-A outfielder in Toronto’s organization and 73 games into his first season at the level when he slept through a phone call from the general manager. The Blue Jays’ farm director finally reached him later in the morning to let him know he had been traded, across the state, to the Cardinals. Toronto wasn’t getting a player in return, just a lump of international spending money the Cardinals didn’t need.
