MIAMI • Not too long after one of the finest lefties available in the market went to the Cleveland Indians, the Cardinals pivoted and acquired Zach Duke, a former starter, from the Chicago White Sox.
The Cardinals wanted to make an Edward Mujica-like move at the deadline and in Duke they found both a lefty who could face righthanded batters and came with another year of control. The Cardinals sent Class AAA center fielder, Charlie Tilson, to the White Sox in exchange for the lefty.
A 12-year veteran, Duke, 33, has reinvented himself as a reliever.
