CARLSBAD, Calif. — It took only the mention of the position and the number of exceptional shortstops available this offseason for Seattle Mariners executive Jerry Dipoto, an interested party, to widen his eyes Tuesday and describe the quantity and quality of the free-agent class.
“It’s vast,” Seattle’s president of baseball operations said.
“It’s certainly the year of the shortstop,” New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman nodded. “With a lot of high-end, talented players coming out at the same time. It’s an impressive group of players, there’s no doubt. … They’re very talented. I’m sure the agents are looking forward to doing business.
