SAN DIEGO • Late in Sunday's game, Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina engaged the home-plate umpire in a conversation that's, well, unusual for that point in the game. The Cardinals were about to finish an 8-5 victory, and closer Trevor Rosenthal had the tying run at the plate with two on and two out. Molina was talking to the ump instead of flashing a sign.
That's because he was apparently worried who was watching him do it.
He spied someone else spying on the field. He spotted a spotter.
According to broadcast coverage and officials after the game, Molina saw a gentlemen in a light Padres' polo shirt with binoculars looking out from the batter's eye directly above the center field fence.
