Thames' two-run homer in first puts Brewers up

Eric Thames, an early-season sensation for the Brewers, had been hitless in his last 11 at-bats. That was until he rifled a 1-2 Mike Leake pitch over the Cardinals’ bullpen in right field for a 2-0 Milwaukee lead in the first inning. Thames’ 17th homer followed a rare leadoff walk issued by Leake to Eric Sogard.

Leake had ranked fourth in the National League in fewest walks allowed at 1.58 per nine innings.
