The Cardinals honored former Post-Dispatch columnist Joe Strauss and Hall of Fame broadcaster Joe Garagiola with a moment of silence before Opening Day on Monday afternoon at Busch Stadium.
The Cardinals also left Seat 16 in the front row of the press box open for Strauss, who succumbed to leukemia in December.
“I think he would be really happy probably if he was still here,” Strauss' daughter, Alexis, said. “I know he really wanted to make it to Opening Day. It was one of his goals. When he was diagnosed we always tried to make goals throughout the process.
