Bill DeWitt Jr. started by reading from a two-sided handwritten prepared statement about a topic without precedent. The Cardinals chairman repeated the term “allegedly” numerous times. His comfort level, shall we say, was predictably nil as his organization’s in-house legal counsel sat in his sight line.
DeWitt tried to address his franchise’s inexplicable entanglement that has grown out of what the FBI believes is a breach of the Houston Astros’ database. He reiterated ignorance of his team’s possible involvement until notified by the FBI. He spoke of the Cardinal “culture,” something that has now become a punch line to those who see hypocrisy in triplicate.
