Cardinals righthander Carlos Martinez, who came out of his last start in the fourth inning Friday because he was still weakened by a respiratory ailment, said he felt better Sunday. He was coughing as he said this but he said, “I will be ready for Saturday.”
This means that, with Monday’s off day built in, Martinez will be operating on seven days’ rest when he pitches against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. This also means that Adam Wainwright and Michael Wacha, who were to have received an extra day of rest, are likely to be bumped up to pitch Thursday and Friday on normal four days’ rest, with Wainwright facing the Angels in Anaheim and Wacha starting the Dodgers series Friday.
