The St. Louis Cardinals promoted Mitch Harris to the majors yesterday for their game against the Washington Nationals. The righthanded reliever replaced outfielder Peter Bourjos, who is on paternity leave, on the St. Louis roster. He gave the Cards an extra bullpen arm at the start of a stretch that has them slated to play 20 games in 20 days.
Perhaps because of Harris as the reliever of last resort, manager Mike Matheny went through six of the eight relievers on the roster during last night's extra-innings loss. Harris and closer Trevor Rosenthal were the only bullpenners Matheny didn't call on against the Nats.
