Sosa would be first emergency catcher in Cardinals game

We now know the identity of the Cardinals’ emergency catchers. With starter and .339 batsman Yadier Molina sitting out Saturday’s rain-delayed game because of some right foot soreness he suffered during an at-bat on Friday, manager Mike Shildt said that infielder Edmundo Sosa and outfielder Austin Dean were the choices, in that order.

Sosa has been doing pregame work rather than Dean in the art of receiving but the Cardinals would reach to the alternate site if they deemed Molina would be out for a considerable period of time. Shildt seemed confident that Molina wouldn’t be out for a long stretch but added that the 38-year-old was undergoing additional imaging Saturday after his initial testing on Friday night and said after the Cardinals’ 2-0 win on Saturday that he had not yet heard the second test results yet.
