Show of force secures marathon victory for Cardinals

Cleanup hitter Marcell Ozuna hit one home run to start the Cardinals’ scoring and another to bring them back from disaster Tuesday night before Yadier Molina’s grand slam thrust the Cardinals toward an 11-8 victory against Washington. A show of force five homers strong rescued the Cardinals’ bullpen one moment and widened the lead the next, but the ninth inning was drawn to Hicks. It took the Cardinals three pitchers to get the final three outs, eventually turning to Hicks for the one-out save with the tying run at the plate.

The win, the Cardinals’ first of September, halted a three-game losing streak and held them fast as one of the two wild-card leaders in the National Leagues.
