JUPITER, Fla. • Matt Wieters, who is due in Cardinals camp later Wednesday and should be working out on Thursday, will “compete“ for the backup job to catcher Yadier Molina, according to manager Mike Shildt. Wieters was signed to a non-roster contract this morning.
Although the switch-hitting, 32-year-old Wieters was a four-time All-Star with Baltimore and also was a regular at Washington, Shildt said that no necessarily had a leg up on that role. Shildt said he already had spoken to Francisco Pena, the backup last year who had a strong game on Tuesday at West Palm Beach, Fla.
