Sherriff gives Cardinals three scoreless innings of relief; Cardinals still trail 5-3

After Michael Wacha's early exit Friday, the Cardinals found themselves in need of more than five scoreless inning from a bullpen that has struggled mightily of late.

In his major league debut, Ryan Sherriff delivered three without allowing a run.

Sherriff, who hadn't pitched more than two innings all season for Class AAA Memphis, walked the first batter he faced in the fifth inning. He then responded by retiring the next six batters he faced to get through the sixth inning.

In the seventh, Sherriff allowed a double to Corey Dickerson to lead off the inning.
