CHICAGO — Previewing the first meeting of high-powered righthanders Jack Flaherty of the Cardinals and California prep school teammate Lucas Giolito of the Chicago White Sox, with their high school pitching coach now a coach with the White Sox also in the mix, Cardinals manager Mike Shildt called it “definitely a movie script.”
He didn’t say it would be a good movie.
Flaherty, one of the leading men, was sabotaged by his own control problems and the actors who were portraying Cardinals defenders. The normally tidy St. Louis defense committed three errors in the first two innings, leading to four unearned runs, as Flaherty suffered his first loss of the season after eight consecutive victories, 8-3.
