LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. • The death Monday of former Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer Bobby Doerr at age 99 leaves former Cardinals infielder and manager Red Schoendienst the oldest living Baseball Hall of Famer at 94.
Schoendienst, who will be 95 on Feb. 2 of next year, didn’t necessarily aspire to this distinction. “I didn’t want him to go,” said Schoendienst by telephone Tuesday from St. Louis.
“It’s time for everything. We were still young kids when we played them in the ’46 Series. He was a helluva good guy and a helluva good player.
