Cardinals starter Jack Flaherty already has been opposed by three San Diego pitchers in the first three innings Friday night in the finale of the wild-card series in San Diego. Both ways are working so far in a scoreless game
Craig Stammen, Tim Hill and Pierce Johnson pitched the first three for the Padres, with Johnson striking out Dylan Carlson on a low breaking ball with the bases loaded to end the third. Flaherty had frozen San Diego's Trent Grisham on strike three with the bases loaded to end the Padres' second.
Flaherty fanned five in the first three innings in which the Padres hit just one ball out of the infield--Mitch Moreland's single to right center in the second.
