SEATTLE • The move that Cardinals manager Mike Matheny has been hesitant to make may have been made for him by one swing from the Seattle Mariners.
After several weeks of asserting closer Trevor Rosenthal’s place in the ninth inning – through words and deeds – Matheny allowed late Friday night that he isn’t sure yet how the club will respond to the latest game flipped on them. The 4-3 loss to the Mariners was both sudden and familiar as Rosenthal allowed a double and a walk before Adam Lind’s game-winning home run. For the third time in seven games Rosenthal blew a save, and any security he had after two saves this past week at Wrigley Field vanished when Lind’s homer did into the right-field seats.
