Deposed closer Trevor Rosenthal, for the fourth time this season on Sunday, failed to retire any of the hitters he faced in an inning. After permitting three singles and a walk to the Milwaukee Brewers in the seventh, Rosenthal was replaced by Matt Bowman with the Cardinals still holding an 8-3 lead.
Bowman got Aaron Hill to hit into a forceout at the plate and went 2-2 to Kirk Nieuwenhuis before another shower forced umpiring crew chief Jerry Meals to call a halt to the game.
Rosenthal was still responsible for all three runners on base. He had had three scoreless outings since he had been removed from the closer's role after a rough game on June 24 when he gave up three runs without getting an out in a 4-3 loss at Seattle.
