Righthander Tewksbury became 'Thinking Man's Pitcher'

Owing, in part, to the fact that his fastball was not very fast, 1990s Cardinals righthander Bob Tewksbury became known as a “Thinking Man’s Pitcher.”

Tewksbury parlayed pinpoint control and acumen into five consecutive double-figure win seasons for the Cardinals. Since then, he has parlayed his intelligence and a master’s degree in sports psychology into a book and a couple of front office jobs, including his current position as senior adviser for mental skills for the Chicago Cubs.
