JUPITER, Fla. • Alex Reyes’ batting practice, as it were, is over. His next appearance will be on a mound as early as next Tuesday at Clearwater, Fla., in what will be his first spring training game since 2016.
Reyes, who has been plagued by elbow and lat injuries the past two seasons, limiting him to one big-league appearance and creating two surgeries, threw to Cardinals’ minor league hitters on Friday.
Shildt said Reyes’ ultimate role would be evaluated at the end of spring but that he will be conditioned to be a starter. Other than four scoreless innings at Milwaukee last May 30, Reyes hasn’t pitched in the majors since he was 4-1 with a 1.
