As the trade deadline approached on June 15, 1964, the St. Louis Cardinals were below .500 and languished in 7th place in the NL standings. A hot finish to 1963 was getting them nowhere in 1964.
Desperate to jump-start his team, Cardinals GM Bing Devine began scouring the trade market. He found a willing partner in Cubs GM John Holland, who was looking to add pitching to his own struggling team. A deal was struck: the Cards would send pitchers Ernie Broglio and Bobby Shantz plus outfielder Doug Clemens, to the Cubs in exchange for pitchers Jack Spring and Paul Toth, plus outfielder Lou Brock.
