ST. LOUIS • David Price, the prize of this year's free-agent class, agreed to a contract with Boston that gives him the chance to set a financial record for starting pitchers or, if he chooses, go through the process again for another jackpot in three years.
The Boston Globe broke the news Tuesday afternoon that Price had agreed to a seven-year, $217-million deal with the Red Sox.
The newspaper cited sources familiar with the negotiations.
The contract is the largest ever, by $2 million, for a starting pitcher, surpassing the extension that the Dodgers awarded Clayton Kershaw.
