The fifth inning did not begin well for Carlos Martinez and the Cardinals.
After hitting leadoff man Scott Schebler with a pitch, Martinez then allowed a triple to shortstop Zack Cozart. Cozart's three-base knock brought home Schebler to give the Reds a 2-0 lead. Through six games, Cozart is batting an even .500.
However, Martinez avoided further damage later in the inning by striking out catcher Stuart Turner and getting opposing pitcher Scott Feldman to ground into a fielder's choice.
With the infield playing in, Feldman grounded it to second baseman Jedd Gyorko, who promptly fired the ball home for Yadier Molina to tag Cozart out at the plate.
