Martinez, who will start the season on the injured list and will not appear in a spring training game, has been on a strength-building, non-throwing program since the second day of camp due to a recurrence of the shoulder issues that limited him to 18 starts and 100.1 innings pitched as a starter in 2018.
Martinez's program has not reached the point where it would change based on his future role, whether that turns out to be starter or reliever. Martinez thrived as a closer late last season, after he returned from that round of shoulder issues. Before Martinez's initial direction this season can be determined, he has to pitch off the mound.
