MILWAUKEE • While the Cardinals' pitchers have really pitched, they really haven't hit this year.
Until righthander Lance Lynn batted in the second inning Sunday, the pitchers had been one for 38, with Lynn's single being the only breakthrough. But then, with two out in the second, Lynn smoked a double to left. That sent Tony Cruz, who had singled, to third base.
Matt Carpenter, riding a 12-game hitting streak, walked to fill the bases against Milwaukee starter Mike Fiers but Jason Heyward grounded into a forceout and the game remained scoreless.
Heyward, however, turned in a diving catch to rob Hector Gomez of a hit in the second after Elian Herrera had blooped a hit out of the reach of shortstop Jhonny Peralta into short left field.
