PHILADELPHIA • Before Matt Carpenter could do something that hasn’t been done all season against Philadelphia’s hotshot rookie reliever, the Cardinals had to accomplish a few things Tuesday they haven’t done enough.
The team with the fewest doubles in baseball conjured two to rally in the seventh inning and gave Greg Holland, freshly back from the disabled list and in search of a role, a lead to hold. His flawless inning braced the Cardinals for a late-game rupture that Carpenter cleaned up the best way the Cardinals know how: with a homer. Carpenter’s solo shot in the ninth inning was the first this season off Philadelphia righthander Seranthony Rodriguez and it catapulted the Cardinals to a 7-6 victory at Citizens Bank Park.
