Quick check on Hicks shows gun-shy Cards are being cautious

MILWAUKEE • Already certain they would only use him for a few pitches Saturday, at some point during Jordan Hicks’ warmups in the seventh inning manager Mike Matheny and catcher Yadier Molina made eye contact. Something seemed off.

The rookie wasn’t as crisp, didn’t have the same whip to his pitches. He looked “different,” as Molina said.

On this road trip the Cardinals have placed two pitchers on the disabled list, Matt Bowman (fingers) and Michael Wacha (oblique strain), and in each case the injury was revealed on the mound moments or innings before the pitcher relented to it.
