Probe of Cardinals is still on hold

SAN DIEGO • While it prepares to offer its verdict on the illegal hacking done by a former Cardinals executive, Major League Baseball remains in a holding pattern, awaiting the end of the criminal proceedings and, Commissioner Rob Manfred said Tuesday, the assistance of parties involved.

Manfred described how baseball’s power to investigate how a Cardinals official illegally breached Houston’s internal database ends at the courthouse door — or, more specifically, the servers involved.

“There are limits to what any private organization can do from an investigative perspective,” Manfred said during his annual meeting with members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.
