NEW YORK — It took Mets slugger Pete "Polar Bear" Alonso one swing to undo all the Cardinals pieced and patched together to rally and force extra innings Thursday night.
The Cardinals held a one-run lead going into the bottom of the 10th inning when Francisco Lindor trotted out to second base, per extra-inning rules. He didn’t have to stand there long. Alonso drilled an offering from Cardinals closer Giovanny Gallegos deep into the left-field seats to flip the Cardinals’ lead and send the Mets to a 7-6 walk-off win Thursday at Citi Field.
The homer erased the lead provided by Albert Pujols in the top of the inning.
