Pena activated; Fryer designated for assignment

KANSAS CITY • Earlier this season, the Cardinals optioned infielder Greg Garcia to Class AAA Memphis when he was hitting .600, although they later brought him back.

On Tuesday, they trimmed veteran backup catcher Eric Fryer, who was hitting .368 and had provided adequate, if infrequent, backup for Gold Glove catcher Yadier Molina.

As expected, switch-hitting catcher Brayan Pena, who hasn’t played for the Cardinals all season after having left knee surgery in the first week of the season, was taken off the disabled list and restored to the 25-man active roster, with Fryer designated for assignment.
