SAN DIEGO • Ian Kennedy, who had a 2-5 record and 8.31 earned run average in his career against the Cardinals was making like Walter Johnson for the first three innings Saturday night. The San Diego Padres righthander struck out five of the first eight Cardinals to face him before his opposite, Carlos Martinez, shot a third-inning double to right for the first extra-base hit of Martinez's career.
Matt Carpenter flied deep to right and Martinez, no doubt taking manager Mike Matheny's breath away, tagged and made it to third with a headfirst slide. But Stephen Piscotty took a third strike and the game remained scoreless.
