The World Umpires Association has not had a good month, and that’s putting it mildly. The last week has been particularly bad for the men in blue, prompting one to wonder if technology has evolved enough to ease some of the burden on the men who often carry their own personal strike zones behind the plate.
We bring this up because of plate umpire Chris Segal’s horrendous performance behind the plate Wednesday night at Fenway Park, where he had several Cardinals and the Red Sox angrily complaining about his erratic and constantly moving strike zone.
To be clear, the Cardinals didn’t lose Wednesday because of Segal.
