The debate seems ridiculous now. It’s almost unbelievable that in spring training some wondered if veteran righthander Adam Wainwright deserved to start on opening day.
Nostalgia would have been the only reason for manager Mike Matheny to give Wainwright the starting nod on opening day instead of Carlos Martinez. That’s not to say either righthander is off to an impressive start this season.
If the Cardinals hope to be playoff contenders this season, Martinez must start to pitch like a front-line starter again and Wainwright must be more than a five-inning pitcher.
The Cardinals’ offense will surely come around.
